Living closer to campus makes student life… better!

Our vision is to transform the student housing experience into a journey of growth and self-discovery by creating affordable and cooperative housing designed for post-secondary students. Whether building new student homes or enhancing existing spaces, our goal is to make housing so seamless that students can focus on their personal and academic success without the stress of finding a place to live.

Projects

Our unique development approach works by creating chapters at campuses across Canada — our chapters are democratic vehicles for student renters and campus commuters to advocate for more affordable student housing options on/near (30 minutes from) campus.

  • Project: Housing York University Students Equitably

    Chapter: HOUSE York

    Location: York University (Keele Campus)

    Status: Pre-Development

    Brief:

    Conducting property (residential/commercial) assessments on/near (30 minutes from) campus:

    • Exploring the financial feasibility of developing 70+ beds of new-build affordable housing near Keele/Finch (15 Mins Away)

    • Awaiting York University RFP for the Lands for Learning to build 280+ beds of new-build affordable housing on-campus

    • Awaiting the completion of Keele/Finch LRT to make a bid on CreateTO’s HousingNow Site at 3933 Keele Street

    • Exploring a community benefits partnership with private developers looking to create affordability options at Downsview Park’s Arbo

  • Project: Housing Mississauga University Students Equitably

    Chapter: HOUSE Toronto

    Status: Pre-Development (Early)

    Brief:

    Exploring property acquisition options on/near (30) minutes from campus. Looking at public & private land opportunities. Seeking property owners, leasers, and sellers (residential & commercial).

    POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT SITES:

    1. FORESTWOOD CO-OPERATIVE

      We are exploring options with the Forestwood Co-operative to develop an apartment residence on vacant land. Current zoning permits high-density apartments. HOUSE has previously met with the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto, as well as the Peel-Halton Co-operative Housing Federation, and is continuing to explore this option.

    2. STUDENT CENTRE EXPANSION

      We are also exploring opportunities to build affordable student residences in tandem with a Student Centre expansion on the Academic Annex’s lands. The current concept of a new building would expand the Student Centre’s event space, while also building affordable residences on top of this new building.
